DOJ told a federal court this week that the NFA relief for suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns rests on ATF’s enforcement policy, not a court order covering everyone. Here’s what that means for Tennessee gun owners.

The General Assembly is adjourned until 2027, so there was no new Tennessee gun action this week. The news came out of federal court, and it’s a reminder that the suppressor win isn’t locked in.
DOJ says the NFA relief rests on ATF’s word
On Monday, DOJ answered the plaintiff states in the Texas NFA case. It told the court that ATF’s October 9 guidance already gives the states what they asked the judge to clarify, and that ATF “will no longer enforce the challenged NFA provisions against anyone.” But DOJ also argued that the court’s injunction itself protects only the parties, meaning the states and their agencies, members and customers, not every resident of the 15 plaintiff states. Tennessee isn’t a plaintiff state.
That means the federal win rests on ATF’s enforcement policy, not a court order covering everyone, and a future administration could reverse it. Machine guns and destructive devices are still fully under the NFA, and state laws aren’t affected, so check Tennessee law before you act on the federal change.
Also from the federal side
On Tuesday the Supreme Court turned away more challenges to the federal felon-in-possession ban and took no new Second Amendment cases. Turning a case down doesn’t set precedent either way. The AR-15 ban case is still set for argument December 2.
National concealed carry reciprocity, H.R. 38, has been sitting on the House calendar since October 3, 2025 without a floor vote.
Coming in Tennessee
The landlord-firearms law, Public Chapter 606, takes effect January 1, 2027.
